Do I have to terminate my contract with my current supplier myself? Could there be a disruption in electricity supply? What does the entire administrative process look like?
Although the Romanian energy market is fully liberalized, these concerns still appear frequently in discussions with companies. In reality, however, the process is now much simpler than it was just a few years ago – mainly thanks to the digitalization of the market and the introduction of the POSF platform (Online Platform for Supplier Switching).
For businesses, this means one thing: changing your electricity supplier can now be done quickly, safely and without complicated administrative procedures.
The Digital Transformation of the Romanian Energy Market
Over the past few years, Romania’s energy market has undergone significant changes. One of the most important developments was the launch of the POSF platform, which significantly simplified the process of switching electricity suppliers for both households and businesses.
POSF is an electronic platform managed by OPCOM and supervised by ANRE, the Romanian energy regulatory authority. The system was designed to streamline and automate the procedures involved in switching suppliers.
As a result, many steps that previously required direct contact with the existing supplier or the distribution system operator are now handled digitally.
For companies, this means fewer formalities, greater transparency and a faster process overall.
How Does the Supplier Switching Process Work in Practice?
The process of changing an electricity supplier for a company can be summarized in a few simple steps.
1. Signing a New Contract
The first step is signing a contract with the new electricity supplier. At this stage, the company’s consumption profile (Load Profile) is analysed and the most appropriate contractual model is selected – for example a fixed price contract, an indexed model, or a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
This is the only stage where the company needs to actively participate.
2. Registering the Change in the POSF System
After the contract is signed, the new supplier registers the data in the POSF platform. The system automatically distributes the necessary information to all parties involved in the process – including the current supplier and the distribution system operator.
All communication takes place within a single digital platform, which significantly reduces the risk of administrative errors.
3. Automatic Processing of the Change
The POSF platform then manages the remaining steps automatically, including:
- confirmation of the supplier switch
- transfer of metering data
- synchronization with the distribution network operator
As a result, the company does not need to contact the previous supplier or manage additional administrative communication.
Is There a Risk of Power Supply Interruption?
One of the most common concerns among companies is the possibility of electricity supply interruption during the supplier switching process. In practice, however, this does not happen.
This is due to a fundamental principle of the European energy market – the separation of supply and distribution activities (unbundling).
This means that:
- electricity continues to flow through the same distribution network,
- the infrastructure and outage management remain the responsibility of the Distribution System Operator (DSO),
- the change concerns only the energy supplier, not the physical source of electricity.
From the operational perspective of the company, nothing changes – except the commercial terms of the contract.
Why Do Companies Decide to Change Their Energy Supplier?
Companies choose to change their electricity supplier for several reasons, most commonly related to three key factors.
Cost Stability
In many industries, electricity is one of the most significant operational costs. A well-structured energy contract can reduce exposure to market price fluctuations and improve budget predictability.
Contract Structure and Flexibility
Companies increasingly look for energy procurement models tailored to their actual consumption profile, such as market-indexed contracts or long-term PPA agreements.
ESG and Sustainability Goals
Purchasing electricity together with Guarantees of Origin (GO) allows companies to report reduced emissions under Scope 2, which is increasingly important for organizations working with international partners or reporting under ESG frameworks.
Supplier Switching as Part of a Company’s Energy Strategy
More and more businesses now view energy not simply as an operational cost but as a strategic component of business management.
The right energy procurement model can directly influence:
- operational cost stability,
- financial planning predictability,
- creditworthiness and relationships with financial institutions,
- the achievement of sustainability and ESG objectives.
In this context, changing an energy supplier becomes not merely an administrative decision but part of a broader long-term energy strategy for the company.
